CAPE VERDEAN ASSOCIATION IN NEW BEDFORD
Aspiring to reach, build, and strengthen partnerships throughout the Cape Verdean diaspora, the CVANB is in the middle of an exciting project to restore the former Strand Theater in the North End into the Cape Verdean Cultural Center. Currently underway is work to repoint the brick in order to install a beautiful new mural by artist Eden Soares.

DATMA: LIGHT 2020 – virtual

Three large-scale animation projection works were installed on three different buildings along Union Street in downtown New Bedford from June 20 and through July 2020 daily after sunset. Research support for this project is made possible through our partnership with New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center.

This spectacular exhibit was seen through the Star Store’s floor to ceiling windows, where viewers were mystified by reflective silver mirrors embedded in welded chain link fencing emitting light and colorful rainbows generated by camera-projector cycles. On display at the corner space that UMass Dartmouth CVPA has newly named “The Swain Studio,” viewers enjoyed this work in both day and evening hours from June 20 until September 14, 2020 at 715 Purchase Street. This project is in partnership with Umass Dartmouth, College of Visual and Performing Arts.

“We Came to Fish, We Came to Work” explores stories of immigration and cultural heritage on New Bedford’s working waterfront. Over the next 8 months, the Center will look at cultural heritage through a variety of virtual programs including film screenings, cooking and craft demos, performances, and talks.

Nathan & Polly Johnson House Virtual Tour
The National Park Service and the New Bedford Historical Society worked in partnership to create this tour, providing the opportunity for everyone to see what is inside. This self-guided interactive tour and narrated video tour allows visitors to explore the interior of this historic home that is normally not open to the public.

SEAPORT ART WALK
To honor the anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the unfinished legacy of the women’s suffrage movement, this year’s 2020 Seaport Art Walk theme celebrated women and was inspired by “Lighting the Way: Historic Women of the SouthCoast”, a project of New Bedford Whaling Museum. Starting in July, new murals and sculptures were installed along the waterfront on Pier 3 and State Pier and on display until October.
