Open Call: 2026 Artist-in-Residence Program

NEW BEDFORD, MA New Bedford Creative at the New Bedford Economic Development Council, in collaboration with the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and the College of Visual and Performing Arts at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is now accepting applications for the 2026 Artist-in-Residence Program. Applications are due Monday, December 1, 2025 at 11:59 PM.

Now entering its ninth year, this nationally recognized program invites artists to explore the rich history, heritage, ecology, identity, and preservation of New Bedford as inspiration for new creative work. Through residencies, the program fosters both artistic exploration and meaningful public engagement, reinforcing the city’s role as a vibrant hub of culture and creativity.

Up to three artists will be awarded residencies in 2026, with sessions scheduled from April–June, July–September, and October–December. Each artist will receive a $2,500 stipend, access to studio and exhibition space, promotional support, and selected supplies. (Housing is not provided.)

Central to the program is the belief that art should be accessible to all. Resident artists are expected to share their work with the community through free workshops, talks, demonstrations, or other public programs, and are encouraged to collaborate with New Bedford’s dynamic arts and culture community.

About the Program:

Since its launch in 2017, the Artist-in-Residence Program at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park has honored the tradition of national parks as sources of artistic inspiration. By inviting artists to interpret and share the park’s stories, the program provides new perspectives on New Bedford’s history and identity.

In 2024, the program expanded through a collaboration with New Bedford Creative at the New Bedford Economic Development Council and UMass Dartmouth’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. This collaboration provides artists with enhanced resources, creative opportunities, and deep community connections that amplify the impact of their work.
