New Bedford Creative Invites Artists to Dive into the Melodies of Resilience Call for Art for the 2024 Seaport Art Walk

NEW BEDFORD, MA – As the winter chill settles in, New Bedford Creative is already setting its sights on the warmth of summer 2024 and the 12th annual Seaport Art Walk. Today, the Seaport Art Walk officially opens its call for artist proposals, seeking to transform New Bedford’s waterfront into a vibrant tapestry of artistic expression with the theme “Call of the Sea.”

This year’s call for art goes beyond the visual, extending an invitation for artists to explore the harmonies that resonate with justice, action, and the soulful plea of the sea. In a world increasingly focused on social and environmental equity, the Seaport Art Walk aims to showcase the resilience and perseverance of the New Bedford community. The 2024 edition celebrates the transformative power of music, a timeless tool for healing and a conduit for conversation.

Founded in 2013 by artist and curator Jessica Bregoli-Sparling, the Seaport Art Walk has become the region’s premier large format outdoor temporary public art installation. Sculptures and murals grace New Bedford’s working waterfront and Seaport Cultural District each summer, creating an immersive experience for residents and visitors alike.

In a departure from previous years, artists this year are encouraged to incorporate musical themes, imagery, or elements of sound into their proposals. Selected works will envision a resilient future for both New Bedford and the planet at large.

Artists submitting proposals may be eligible for grants of up to $2,500 for new sculptures or murals, with additional honorariums of up to $1,000 available for existing outdoor artworks.

The Seaport Art Walk 2024 is a juried show, with reviewers from esteemed partnerships including New Bedford Creative Consortium, City of New Bedford’s Parks, Recreation and Beaches and Tourism and Marketing Departments, Massachusetts Design, Art and Technology Institute (DATMA), New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, UMASS Dartmouth’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), and Bristol Community College (BCC) Visual and Performing Arts Department.
