The City of New Bedford is seeking an artist to create a life-sized statue of former Mayor Charles S. Ashley, the city’s longest-serving mayor. Serving for 32 non-consecutive years between 1890 and 1936, Mayor Ashley was known as “the builder of New Bedford,” guiding the city through a period of remarkable growth and transformation.
This new statue will celebrate Mayor Ashley’s legacy and contributions to civic life, industry, and culture. It will be installed in Ashley Park, located at Rivet and Orchard Streets in the Goulart Square neighborhood, an area currently undergoing major revitalization.
